Origin of martial arts

Thank author of this post/commentZen master Bodhidharma went to China when he realized that Dhyana Buddhism (Zen) was dying in India due to, among other things, the moslem invasions.

So he took his teachings to China where, after a famous interview with Empreror Wu, he settled in Shaolin Monastery to meditate.

Groups of people gathered around him to receive his teachings.

Zazen meditation is also known as "not doing". This means "not doing" with our minds, doing but not thinking about it.

China was engulfed in civil strife and banditry, and citizens were not allowed the used of weapons.

The only thing the monks could use to defend themselves was their fists and feet.

Thus, thoughtless activity and self-defense tactics got together and produced the "Shaolin fighting" methods.

Martial arts had begun!

These days it is an advantage to learn martial arts most especially for young people so that they can have self defense. In the kind of situation

This is an interesting mini history lesson. I wonder how much of it is actually true and how much is just legend, but it does sound plausible enough. Definitely, the reason martial arts was invented was because most people could not afford weapons, or like you said, were not allowed their use. It was also a form of sport and becoming one with nature, as far as I know, and weapons would have interfered with connecting with nature.

That is so true. During these days, it is important that we do know some basic moves to protect ourselves and just be ready just in case we get to encounter such events when we are forced to fight back.

And learning one martial art would do the trick. Basically, it would be primarily needed for anyone wishing to learn martial arts to know about the origin of the art he or she is practicing.

I am going to encourage my 2 sons to get into martial arts but I will let them choose the type of martial arts that they would like to get into. Martial arts when taught by a brilliant master teaches students not only about self-defense but also about having the right values such as discipline, humility, foresight, tolerance, and perseverance, among others. Martial arts also keeps you fit and strong.

I guess the short history mentioned above might be true at the start. But when I watch movies involving martial arts or Shaolin fighters, I see some using the things they have at hand, like their staff, as weapons. Could it be that they've learned to use those things later on. Or is it just in the movies?
