How fun is Golf as a Sport?

I have seen it over and over again (from television to movies), wealthy guys having a peaceful afternoon at a grassy field playing golf. You can say I might have the resources to try it but I don't want to jump with both feet on a sport which may turn out to be very addicting and expensive at the same time.

I just would like to know what is it really like to play golf and why is it such a good sport?
